The project in Astypalea demonstrates in practice how reflective waterproofing membranes can reduce indoor temperatures by up to 5°C.

KRAFT Paints, a member of the Druckfarben Group and the sole representative of Greece in the Nova Paint Club, is participating in the international campaign "Cool Roofs. Smart Choice.", an initiative aimed at the broader adoption of reflective cool roof coatings as an effective response to the growing challenge of extreme heat.

As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, the need for practical and affordable climate change adaptation solutions is more imperative than ever. Cool roof waterproofing materials constitute one of the most immediate and effective interventions, as they reflect a greater percentage of solar radiation and absorb less heat compared to conventional dark surfaces.

The application of reflective waterproofing coatings can help reduce a building's indoor temperature by 3 to 5°C, significantly improving comfort conditions while limiting the need for air conditioning and reducing energy consumption.

A Greek Example with a Measurable Impact

As part of this initiative, KRAFT Paints participated in the energy upgrade of a school building in Astypalea by applying the advanced waterproofing system Total Proof™ PU Fiber 25. The project was integrated into the "Cool Astypalea" program and demonstrated in practice the contribution of waterproofing membranes to improving the thermal behavior of buildings.

Following the application of the system, a reduction in indoor temperature of up to 5°C was recorded, creating better conditions for students and teachers, while simultaneously reducing cooling needs and the building's operational energy costs.

This specific intervention highlights how innovative waterproofing solutions can offer substantial benefits to local communities, enhancing the resilience of public infrastructure against the impacts of climate change.

A Global Initiative with a Local Footprint

The "Cool Roofs. Smart Choice." campaign is being implemented simultaneously by Nova Paint Club members in various countries, including Canada, Portugal, the Philippines, and Mexico, promoting the exchange of expertise and best practices for tackling extreme heat through innovative coating solutions.

Through its participation in the initiative, KRAFT Paints reaffirms its strategic commitment to "Innovation that adds value," developing solutions that contribute to improving the energy efficiency of buildings, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating more sustainable and resilient cities.

The Benefits of Cool Roofs

  • Reduction of indoor temperature by up to 5°C.
  • Limitation of energy consumption and cooling costs.
  • Improvement of comfort and health for building occupants.
  • Extension of the roof's lifespan.
  • Contribution to reducing the urban heat island effect.
  • Support for the transition to more sustainable and resilient urban environments.

"Just as we adapt our lifestyle to respond to increasingly stronger and more frequent heatwaves, we must also redesign the way we cool our buildings, consuming as little energy as possible. Roofs, ceilings, and terraces with properly applied waterproofing are a simple, immediately applicable solution with significant benefits for people, buildings, and cities," stated Natalia Karavasili, Partnerships Manager at KRAFT Paints.
